Dragacevo is a small town nested in the very heart of Western Serbia. Many perople say that it is the most picturesque area in Serba, and it has been well-known as »little Switzerland« for a long time. It is placed among and guarded by the bosoms of magnificent mountains: Ovcar, Jelica, Troglav and Golubac, through which flows the river Bjelica, the upper course of which is fast, and the lower is quiet. The Dragacevo area spreads among the towns Cacak, Kraljevo, Ivanjica, Arilje and Pozega on area of 661 km2, and it comprises 49 settlements, out of which 47 are village settlements and two are town settlements (small towns Lucani and Guca).

You can reach this area from four directions:
- via Cacak and the Jelica mountain;
- from Kraljevo via the village Kaona;
- from Ivanjica via the Kotraza village;
- from Uzice, Pozega and Cacak from the road which leads along Ovcar-Kablar gorge, and from which the road parts off from the main road and leads along the valley of the river Bjelica.

From Belgrade, you can reach Dragacevo via Gornji Milanovac and Cacak (about 140 kilometres). Dragacevo was probably named after the river Dragacica which springs at the bottom of Jelica mountain and disgorges into the Bjelica river in Guca. According to the second traditional folk belief, it was named after Dragas, an aristocrat in the Middle Ages, the time when czar Dusan ruled in this country. The inhabitants of Dragacevo were mostly immigrants. The more intensive immigration to Dragacevo – from Montenegro, Herzegovina and Stari Vlah had started at the end of 17th century, and it lasted by the end of 19th century. Thus, it is not wonder why the speech of the people in Dragacevo is basically jekavian dialect. Recently, however, there has been a strong influence of ekavian dialect both in speech and writing.

According to the register from 2002, there are 24.614 inhabitants in Dragacevo. The number of households, according to the same register, is 8.374. People from Dragacevo are very hospitable. In all families, each guest is entertained with a special respect. They are curious and talkative, they like humour, stories, jokes… During all seasons, Dragacevo offers the most diverse possibilities for rest and recreation: untouched nature, reveilles (morning gatherings), and twilight gatherings in the villages… Moreover, this mountainous area has been well-konwn by hard-working and hospitable local residents, clean and healing water springs, beautiful and rich orchards, woods and pastures, which are situated at 550 metres above sea level.

The beauty and importance of the old buildings in this area, wooden cottages, semi-cottages, outbuildings, dairy stores, sheds in which brandy is made and water mills represent a unique monumental whole. Buildings made of wood adorn almost every courtyard in the country. Owing to this favourable geographical and transit position, Dragacevo has good prerequisites for the development of tourism. Monumental rarities and versatile natural beauties are attractive for turists for sightseeing, picnics and recreation, and they allow the development of tourism in this area.

Dragacevo is far well-know by its natural monuments and natural rarities: caves, trunks and woods, which are preserved by the state. It comprises “two English oaks – Djurdjevak” in Donja Kravarica village, and “Dragacevo trunks” which consists of nine tree trunks in different villages of Dragacevo, all of which, due to their old age, attractive scenery and biological value, were proclaimed to be protected natural resources by the state. Dragacevo is rich in monuments. Churches in Dragacevo shared the same destiny as people from Dragacevo. They were built, but bullies destroyed them, the invaders – especially the Turks. During the days of freedom, people renewed or built them again.

In Dragacevo, there haven¢t been any churches from the time before the First Serbian Uprising. But, during the time of Karadjordje¢s Uprising, and after that, especially since 1815, the old churches have been renewed and the new ones built. Churches in Goracici, Tijanje, Guca, Kaona, Kotraza and Vica remained ever-lasting cultral monuments. In Dragacevo area, there are also many monasteries dating from 16th till 19th century. They were religious, spiritual and cultural centres of this area. In 1960, F. Kanic, a writer who wrote about his travels, called the Ovcar-Kablar gorge »a Serbian Holly Mountain Athos« because of many monasteries. In the area of Dragacevo there are three monasteries: Sretenje (visitation of the Virgin), Svete Trojice (Holly Trinity) and Preobrazenje (Transfiguration). Since 1945, there have not been any churches built in Dragacevo. However, during the last decade of 20th and at the beginning of 21st century, this picture changed – churches were built in Lucani, and in villages Donji Dupac (two), Zeoke, Kotraza and Lisa.

The village Gornja Kravarica is situated in the Lucani municipality, in Dragacevo, seven kilometres from the town Guca, and 160 kilometres from the capital of Serbia – Belgrade. It is situated at the spring area of the river which has the same name, among Golubac, Draca and Krstac, and it borders on villages: Rti, Donja Kravarica and Mirosaljci.

The name Kravarica is connected with the story which says that the cattle always found the best grass around the spring of a river in the village Gornji Rti, which exists today. That spring, from which the cows drank water after the pasture, was named Kravarica. Nearby the river which flows out from the spring, the village was founded, and it was split, in time, into two villages (Gornja and Donja Kravarica). This village was mentioned for the first time under its present name in the written documents dating from 1525, which are related to the town called Uzice, and in a document dating from 1476 it was mentioned under the name of the Kravaric village.

In 1895, threre were 720 inhabitants in this village, which was also the seat of the municipality (for two villages: Gornja Kravarica and Rti). In the study about Dragacevo daing from 1902, it is said that the oldest families in Gornja Kravarica were of a very old and unknown origin. They were: the Stanijevics, the Tomasevics, the Jelics, the Boskovics, the Danilovics, the Bogicevics, the Baralics, the Mijailovics, the Trifunovics, the Rosics, the Kovacevics, the Perovics, and the Radicevics. In 1931, there were 1.515 inhabitants in the village. It was completely inhabited by the Serbs (according to the register from 2002), and, according to the last three registers, a slight drop in the number of inhabitants was noticed.

Today, there are about 150 households in the village Gornja Kravarica, and according the register dating from 2002. – there are 419 inhabitants.

Gornja Kravarica is, for sure, a place which gives you relaxation away from the urban life, offering you fresh air, a smell of hay and flowers… Untouched nature, orchards and vineyards, woods and meadows, springs and small rivers, narrow roads and forest clearings are the ambient which does not let you feel indifferent. It is an oasis of peace, tranquility and silence. The area is equally attractive during all four seasons. Walks along the paths of Golubac mountain, bicycling up to Roman well and up to other hidden places of Dragacevo, collecting herbs and forest fruits, skiing and sledging, hunting and fishing – they form just a part of the memories which you can take with you after visiting this village. And above all, you will remember its nice hosts, who welcome and entertain every tourist as if he were their friend and cousin, offering them rich meals consisting of healthy and natural food. In Gornja Kravarica there are only two grocery stores, a four-year Primary school and the village cooperative, and, after only a fifteen-minutes walk on foot, you will find yourself in beautiful »Vajati«, a fairytale-like oasis for relaxation and pleasure.

This town, which has only about 3.000 inhabitants, is surrounded from all sides by hills and woods, so it is a real oasis for those who want to find peace.

Guca became well-known in the world owing to the Trumpet festival which takes place every year in Guca at the beginning of August. No wonder why a big tin trumpet, a symbol of this town, is the first thing you will see entering this town, coming from the direction of Cacak. Guca was mentioned for the first time in the historical records in 1476. The process of establishing the settlement of Guca started in 1831 by building the church. Guca became a town in 1892, and it obtained the status of “aerial spa” in 1930. There are two legends about the name Guca: one is about a turtledove bird, and other says that, due to the invasion of the Turks, people from Guca were forced to hide and huddle.

In Guca, there are numerous cafes and restaurants in which young people and old townsmen meet. Nearby the center and the Man with a trumpet monument, there is a hotel called »Golden Trumpet«, as well as a cultural center, post office, bank, currency exchange office, police… In Guca, there are also Primary and Secondary schools, Health Center, hospital, market, petrol stations, grocery shops, boutiques…

Last year, nearby the stadium of the football team called »Dragacevo«, a local swimming pool was opened, with the accompanying sports and recreational playgrounds for basketball, mini football, handball, walleyball… Another magnificent hotel, which is being built by the Radicevic family, will be soon finished in this town, almost the very center of it, nearby the Man with a trumpet monument. In the yard of that hotel, the hosts of “Vajati” have their tent available during the days of the Trumpet festival, and they entertain their numerous guests there. That place has been well-known to the participants of the festival due to the fantastic amusement and rich meals.

You can also see in Guca

- the Church devoted to the Saint Arhangels Michael and Gavril;
- the famous Man with a trumpet monument (situated in the very centre of Guca);
- a beautiful botanical garden (in the park of the Primary school);
- the Museum of tombstones and roadside monuments;
- a monument devoted to the fallen fighters of the National Liberation War and to the victims of the fascist terror (in front of the hotel »Golden Trumpet«);
- Busts of national heroes;
- Cultural centre, where you can see a permanent exhibition of the members of Association of naive painters and sculptors of Dragacevo.

The city is located on the bank of the river Western Morava, and it is about 30 kilometres far away from “Vajati”. At the time of the last official records, Cacak became the fourt biggest city in central Serbia with 117. 072 inhabitants. Belgrade, Nis and Kragujevac are the only three cities bigger than Cacak. It is a city famous not only for its cultural and historical monuments, museums, exhibitions, beautiful nature and the environments, but also for its great atmosphere and exciting night life…

The tumultuous history of Cacak and its surroundings has left behind many cultural and historical monuments. Many of those monuments were damaged or distroyed due to the wars in the past. However, a certain number of these monuments was preserved and they are tourist attractions of this city.

- Roman baths: They originate from the fourth century, the time when this area was a part of the Roman province of Dalmatia. It is the oldest material monument showing us the history of this city, and it is situated in the city centre.

- Accomodation house of Jovan Obrenovic: It was built in the oriental-balcanic style in 1835. Then, the seat of the district was in Cacak, and it was headed by Jovan Obrenovic, a brother of Milos Obrenovic. Above the entrance, on the main facade, there is a painted coat-of -arms of the Obrenovics (the only one preserved in Serbia). Today, there is a permanent exhibition of the National Museum in the accomodation house.

- A mounment devoted to the heroes from the First World War: erected in 1934 and devoted to the killed Serbian fighters, but it was also devoted to the enemy fighters killed in the same war. It is unique in the whole world. On one of its sides there is an orthodox cross, on the other side there is a catholic cross, on the third side there is an islamic semi-moon, and on the fourth side – a Jewish star.

- A mounment devoted to Tanasko Rajic: a historic event which marked the 19th century in Cacak was the fight on the hill of Ljubic, which had a crucial influence on the outcome of the Second Serbian Uprising. The monument was built as a sign of gratitude to the famous gunner called Tanasko Rajic, who died in 1815.

- A mounment devoted to duke Stepa Stepanovic: it is located it the centre of the city, in front of the post office. Plates have been set along the way from the monument up to the house in which Stepa Stepanovic had lived, with the years of battles, in which he had participated, inscribed on them.

- A mounment devoted to the participants of Hadzi-Prodan’s rebellion: it is located in the port of the old church in Trnava. It has the shape of the unwrapped flag and it constantly reminds of those who fought under the flag of Hadzi-Prodan Gligorijevic in 1814.

- Artistic gallery called “Nadezda Petrovic”: It was founded in 1961 and it is one of the oldest and the most importaint institutions of this type in the country. The gallery was named Nadezda Petrovic (1873-1915), who was born in Cacak, and who was the most important woman painter from the beginning of the 20th century, whose paintings connected the Serbian art with the contemporary European artistic streams. The gallery’s activity is following the contemporary painting production through the exhibiting activity as well as the protection of mobile cultural goods. The gallery possesses 400 exhibiting units which represent Serbian art.

The town was established long time ago, in 1833, at the order of duke Milos. As for its surface, it is one of the biggest municipalities in Serbia, spreading on the area of 1.090 square kilometres, and, according to the latest records, about 36.000 inhabitants live there, and in town itself there are about 15.000 inhabitants. Ivanjica is an admnistrative, cultural and economy center of the municipality, and, together with the minicipalities of Lucani, Cacak and Gornji Milanovac, it forms the Moravicka region.

Ivanjica is situated on the bank of the river Moravica, at the height of 469 metres above the sea level. It is situated in the lovely valley surrounded by monuments Golija, Javor, Mucanj and Cemernica. Due to its preserved nature and completely clean environment, Ivanjica was proclaimed an aerial spa.

In Ivanjica there are the following cultural and historical monuments:

- Church of the Saint czar Constantine and Czarina Helen, which was erected in 1836;

- stone bridge on the river Moravica built in 1904, which is the biggest single-arched bridge in the Balkan area;

- generating station on the river Moravica, built in 1911. It was the fifth hydroelectric power station in Serbia, with a beautiful waterfall which is a visual symbol of Ivanjica;

- a monument dedicated to general Draza Mihailovic, which is situated it the centre of the town;

- The monument of the Revolution;

- nearby the town, there is a Palibrcki grave on which a church was erected on the grave of Bosko Jugovic (a warrior from Kosovo battle) dedicated to Saint duke Lazar, as well as the Kovilje monastery, dating from the 13th century, which is 25 km far away from Ivanjica;

- Hadzi Prodan’s cave, which is a combination of an important turistic, speleological and archeological monument.

CHURCH OF THE SAINT CZAR CONSTANTINE AND CZARINA HELEN

It is situated it the centre of Ivanjica. It was erected in 1836, three years after the establishing of the town. It is the only building dating from that historical period. It survived two fires during which the whole town was burnt. It was painted in 1862, and the painting has been completely preserved.

STONE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER MORAVICA

For the visitors of Ivanjica, the stone bridge nearby the Javor-Dragacevo road is of a special interest. It is the biggest single-arched bridge in the Balkan area, built on the principle of wedges, without connective material. It was built by the Italian workers in 1906. It is used for traffic and as well as a pedestrian crossing. Trucks have been forbidden to cross this bridge recently.

GENERATING STATION ON THE RIVER MORAVICA

It was built in 1911 as the fifth hydroelectric power station in the country. It has been functioning still (it illuminated the town park), but it was turned into a museum. Together with its old “Siemens” machines which have a historical value, it today represents an interesting object which attracts both electrical engineers and tourists. A concrete dam of 9 meters height forms a beautiful waterfall, a visual symbol of the town, situated in front of the hydroelectric power station. Brave swimmers come to the dam in summer and jump from it into the deep water.

MONUMENT DEVOTED TO GENERAL DRAZA MIHAILOVIC (1893-1946)

It is situated at the centre of the town, and it was erected in April 2003 as a sign of attention towards the legendary leader of the Ravnogorski movement in the Second World War (to the general and commander of the Yugoslav Royal Army in the country – to Draza Mihailovic). Nearby the monument there is a house (Cica’s House) which became the Ravnogorska library and the museum of the Ravnogorski movement.

THE MONUMENT OF THE REVOLUTION

Located at the very centre of Ivanjica, it was made by a famous artist and revolutionary – Djordje Andrejevic – Kun. The monument is, in fact, a mosaic of dimensions 5 x 2.4 m, and it represents the uprising, fight and victory against the Germans. Hadzi Prodan’s cave and Church of St. Archangel Michael

Hadzi Prodan’s cave was named after a duke of Karadjordje’s, who was hiding the refugees into the cave. It is located in the valley of the Rascanska river (thus it was called “Rascanska cave”), which is 7 kilometres far away from Ivanjica, on the road leading to Guca, at about 600 metres height above sea level. The investigated length of the cave is about 400 metres, and it consists of two floors. In the central part of the hall, there are thick stalactites and stalagmites, surrounded by powerful waterfalls resembling stone-like waterfalls.

In Hadzi Prodan’s cave there were 25 new species of cave animals (insects) found, which are either rare or completely unknown in the world. The destroyed church in fornt of the cave was rebuilt, and it was called “Adzija’s”. It was built for the first time in 1909 and it was devoted to Archangel Michael.

Natural beauties of this area and richness of cultural and historical monuments make it very attractive for the visitors. Meandering of the river Western Morava, endless greenness of the surrounding woods, monasteries and artificial lakes are tourist attractions of this area.

There are 12 monasteries in this gorge. On the left side of the Western Morava, under Kablar mountain, there are the following monasteries: Blagovestenje (Annunciation), Ilinje, Jovanje, Nikolje i Uspenje (Assumption), and under Ovcar mountain there are: Vavedenje, Vaznesenje, Preobrazenje (Transfiguration), Svete Trojice (the Holly Trinity) and Sretenje.

Ilinje is the only monastery which was not renewed, and other monasteries live a real orthodox life – full of the prayers of the monks, and they are the pilgrimage places for visits of both believers and tourists.

Besides the monasteries, in this area there are two more sanctuaries: the church of Saint Sava and the cave Kadjenica, which are both unique memorial places.

MONASTERY OF BLAGOVESTENJE:
The monastery of Blagovestenje, together with the church of the Annunciation of the Holly Mother of God, dates from the 17th century. It is located on the left bank of the river Morava, under Kablar mountain, in Ovcar Banja.
The church is of a very interesting architecture – it is a single-nave building of Raska type, onto which a wooden corridor was additionaly built later. The painitngs were painted from 1602 until 1632, and they are among the best artistic works in the Serbian wall painting in the first half of the 17th century.
Out of the old rood screen, the main icon of the Mother of God was preserved, with Christ, which were painted by a painter called Mitrofon in 1602.

ILINJE MONASTERY:
It is located in the vicinity of Ovcar Banja, above the Blagovestenje monastery.

The church itself is not very big. It is surrounded by a thich conifer wood, and was erected in 1938 on the foundations of an old monastery.

The renewal of this monastery was started by Saint Nikolaj Velimirovic. The Ilinje monastery celebrates the Ilindan Day (August 2nd). On that day big assemblies take place near the Ilinje monastery, and in Ovcar Banja, too.

JOVANJE MONASTERY:
It is dedicated to the birth of Saint John the Baptist. It is located on the left bank of the river Western Morava. It was mentioned for the first time in 1536. Due to the building of the hydroelectric power station in 1959, the old monastery was destroyed and moved onto its present location.
Due to the special importance of this monastery, but also due to the hospitality of its nuns, this monastery is visited by many believers all the time during the year.

NIKOLJE MONASTERY:
The Nikolje monastery, with the church called Saint Nikolje, is located on the bank of the river Western Morava, under Kablar mountain. Nikolje was mentioned for the first time in 1489, so it is supposed that it could be the oldest Ovcar-Kablar monastery.

According to the tradition, the monastery was built by the monks who were forced to move back because of the Cathalonian intruders, or after the battle on the river Marica. Parvis was painted in 1637, and the rest in 1697.

In the monastery, a great number of handwritten books was preserved. Nearby the Morava river, there is also a accomodation place built by the duke Milos Obrenovic.

USPENJE MONASTERY:
It was built on the left bank of the Western Morava in 1939, on the northern slopes of Kablar mountain. The present church was built on the foundations of the old monastery.

Nearby the present monastery, on the hill above the Jovanje monastery, there is a place called Kulina with the remnants of the square-shaped tower and with one building of rectangular foundation leaned agains the rock.
The monastery was renewed and dedicated on September 23, 2001.

VAVEDENJE MONASTERY:
The Vavedenje monastery, together with the church Vavedenje of the Holly Mother of God, is located on the right bank of the river Western Morava.

Accoridng to the legend, this monastery was built by Simeon Nemanja and his son, Saint Sava. It was mentioned for the first time in 1452, and it was renewed in 1797.

In the monastery, there are rare books among which there is also the Belgrade Quadrigospel, printed in 1552.

VAZNESENJE MONASTERY:
It was built at the end of the 12th century. The founder of this monastery was Stefan Stracimir, brother of Stefan Nemanja. It was mentioned for the first time in written documents between 1207-1215. In its treasury there are valuable religious objects which have a great historical and artistic value.
The church and the accomodation places were renewed in 1997 on their old foundations. In a new church there are two marble rosettes, adorned with plant ornaments, as well as the Quadrigospel, which was rewritten in this monastery in 1570.

PREOBRAZENJE MONASTERY:
The old monastery called Transfiguration of the God was located on the left bank of the river Western Morava. It was mentioned for the first time between 1528 and 1530. However, it was destroyed in 1911 because of the building of a railway, and the present monastery is located, unlike the old one, on the right bank of the river Western Morava.

The present monastery Preobrazenje was built in 1938 and it is located on the right bank of the river Western Morava. After the blessing of bishop Nikolaj, the life in this monastery was organized on a stirct principle, which means that it has neither a parish nor property, but it has a missionary role.

SVETE TROJICE MONASTERY: In the middle of the wildreness, in a peaceful atmosphere which is necessary for deep and constant prayers, on the slopes of Ovcar mountain, there is a monastery called the Holly Trinity (Svete Trojice). The oldest written record about the monastery dates from 1594/95.
The church is a single-nave building with an obvious influence of the Raska architecture. The architecture of this monastery is the most beautiful of all the monasteries in Ovcar-Kablar gorge.

SRETENJE MONASTERY:
Out of all the monasteries in Ovcar-Kablar gorge, this monastery is located highest above the sea level (600 m). It was mentioned for the first time in 1623 relating to its destruction. It was renewed in 1818.
The temple was painted in 1844 during the time of Uzice’s bishop Nicifor Maksimovic and duke Alexander Karadjordjevic.

In 1845, a wall was built, surrounding the monastery complex.

A CHURCH DEDICATED TO SAINT SAVA:
Under the old slopes of Kablar mountain, underneath a rock in a small recess of a stone, there is a water spring which forms a small reservoir of 2 to 3 litres in volume That water is still and does not flow any further. The water is always there although people take it in big quantities. This water is called “the water of Saint Sava” and it is believed that it is a miraculous water.

Nearby the spring, in 1938, a small church dedicated to Saint Sava was built.

A CAVE CALLED KADJENICA:
It was named after a tragic event during the time of Hadzi Prodan’s rebellion. Namely, people fled into this cave, but the Turks found it, covered its entrance with straw and branches, and they burnt it, so that people in the cave suffocated.

In 1940, the bones were collected and buried in the same cave, in two stone sarchophaggies in the altar, in which a Christ’s crucifixion was made.
